Kathanayagan - A Tamil Comedy Film

Kathanayagan (transl. Hero) is a 2017 Tamil-language romantic comedy film written and directed by Tha. Muruganantham. The film stars Vishnu Vishal, Catherine Tresa, Anandaraj, and Soori in the lead roles. The film was produced by Vishnu Vishal under his banner Vishnu Vishal Studioz and distributed by Fox Star Studios. The film features music composed by Sean Roldan and cinematography by J. Laxman.


The film revolves around Thambidurai, a revenue inspector who falls in love with Kanmani, a school teacher. However, Kanmani's father Subramani wants her to marry a brave man who can protect her from any danger. Thambidurai is a coward who is afraid of everything and everyone. He tries to impress Kanmani's father by pretending to be a brave man, but ends up in trouble. He also gets involved in a misunderstanding with a Dubai-based gangster Kaaja Bhai, who thinks that Thambidurai is a police officer who is after him. How Thambidurai manages to win over Kanmani and her father, and how he escapes from Kaaja Bhai's wrath forms the rest of the story.

The film was announced in September 2016 by Vishnu Vishal, who decided to produce and act in the film under his own banner. He roped in debutant director Tha. Muruganantham, who had previously worked as an assistant director to Suseenthiran and Pandiraj. Catherine Tresa was signed as the female lead, while Anandaraj and Soori were cast in supporting roles. The film began production in September 2016 and was completed by March 2017.


The music for the film was composed by Sean Roldan, who collaborated with Vishnu Vishal for the first time. The soundtrack album consists of five songs, which were released by Sony Music India on 8 August 2017. The lyrics were written by Yugabharathi, Vignesh Shivan, GKB, and Sean Roldan himself. The songs were well received by the audience and critics alike.

Release and reception

The film was released on 8 September 2017 across Tamil Nadu. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the performances of Vishnu Vishal and Soori, but criticized the weak script and direction. The film was also compared unfavorably to the Malayalam film Nadodikkattu (1987), which had a similar plot and characters. The film was a moderate success at the box office, collecting around 10 crore in its theatrical run.
